Agriculture Department investing $420 million to strengthen food supply chain infrastructure.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that its $420 million Resilient Food Systems Infrastructure Program (RFSI) will fund groundbreaking projects that are designed with a focus on processing and distribution capacity. The program is intended to increase resilience across various platforms and strengthen local and regional food systems to reach underfunded communities.
The USDA has chosen 12 Regional Food Business Centers from rural areas nationwide. The department will supply ranchers, farmers, and other food businesses with technical assistance, national coverage coordination, and capacity building. The recipients will also be given access to new markets and to navigate local, state, and federal resources—narrowing the gap to success. Additionally,
“USDA recognizes that local and regional food systems are essential to the overall food supply chain and the new Regional Food Business Centers are the cornerstone of our efforts to support them,” said Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs Jenny Lester Moffitt. “The resources and diverse knowledge offered through the Centers will make the opportunities available through dozens of USDA programs more accessible to small and mid-sized producers and food and farm businesses.”
